2010 Parenting Workshop

I recently attended our 'Parenting with Grace and Truth' workshop given by Jimmy and Anita Allen from Connecticut and loved it. I have been a mom for about 23 years and been to many parenting workshops before, so I thought, 'What can I possibly learn from another parenting workshop?' Well, it was full of practical and spiritual advice - and I am so glad I went! Here are a few of the things I learned:

What do teens have in common with their parents? That's what about 125 teens, middle schoolers and their parents came to find out this past weekend at the first ever teen and middle school/parent campout at Lake Pleasant, AZ. Many arrived at Lake Pleasant surprised to find such a beautiful area so close to us. The desert mountains were in bloom and we were able to set up camp right next to the water.

There is nothing more inspiring than being in the midst of hundreds of women whose sole purpose is to draw closer to God! Just a few weeks ago, women from all over Arizona had a chance to experience a fantastic Women’s Retreat at the El Conquistador Resort in Tucson. Inspired by the theme Completely His, this year's retreat was a relaxing escape to help us accomplish such a purpose of being completely God's.

Throughout Christian history many churches have followed a similar challenging life cycle. Congregations begin with a period of excitement, vibrancy, and growth. After so many years, that is usually followed by a period of plateau, which is unfortunately followed by a period of decline. But when the following critical ingredients are mixed in, new life is breathed into the church and it is reinvigorated.

On August 8th the West Region had a dynamic Parenting Workshop that left our parents wanting more. Elders from around our Church, as well as highly respected parents from the West Region, came together to inspire our families. It was a great night filled with inspiration, practicals and relationship building. Lessons included specific teaching on parenting Boys and Parenting Girls. As well as specific teaching for the different age groups from birth to college age. It was a great beginning to what could be a very powerful tradition. Thank you to all the participated. The lessons should be on the web-site soon.

2009 PVCC Women's Workshop

On Sunday, January 18th the women of the Phoenix Valley Church of Christ gathered together for an inspirational workshop. The workshop was centered around our theme for the year from 1 John 4:19, We love because He first loved us. It was a great time of fellowship and of worship. Our congregational Women's Ministry Leader, Gail Sciascia, delivered a powerful lesson based on the Samaritan woman in John 4. She inspired the women to see the power of being loved by Jesus, the power to witness through sharing our personal testimony, and the power to open our eyes to see all the ways that God wants to use us and help others.

HOPE Day of Service

On Saturday, October 11, volunteers from PVCC participated in a HOPE day of service at Children First Academy in downtown Phoenix. Children First Academy is a school targeting kids who are homeless or underprivileged. 180 volunteers served and entertained over 370 parents and kids at the event. The event included numerous carnival-like games with prizes, inflatibles for the kids, lunch for all attendees, snacks and treats, music and entertainment, face painting, and beauty services including haircuts, nails, and pedicures. The day of service helped the school enroll 17 new students, which translates into approximately $60,000 of additional funding for the school. Children First Academy accepts a variety of donations; more information is available at their website: http://childrenfirst.edkey.org (http://childrenfirst.edkey.org). Thank you to all who participated and helped make this a great day!

Phoenix recently had the privilege of hosting two great conferences for churches in the Southwestern US. Disciples from churches in California, Hawaii, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona braved the July heat to hear great messages, see old friends, make new
friends, and above all be encouraged and inspired in their walk with
God.

Gary & Gail Sciascia New Congregational Evangelist and Woman's Ministry Leader

On June 22, at our recent congregational service, the elders appointed Gary Sciascia as our new Phoenix Valley congregational evangelist. Gordon Ferguson had been serving in this capacity for the past several years in an interim capacity, while we were looking for just the right person for the role. Thankfully, God has provided us with that very man, who has an equally qualified wife! Gail will serve alongside Gary as the congregational women’s ministry leader, a role in which Theresa Ferguson formerly served.

Studies on Salvation

Why a New Study Series?

A few years ago, the PVCC leadership, like many other churches, sat down and worked on a new study series to be used in helping others become Christians. Our series was named the ‘Good News Study Series.' It was, and is, a great study series with which we believe someone could sit down and study with someone to help them become a Christian.

We have found, however, that for a variety of reasons, many in our church still use the original study series with which many of us became Christians. Perhaps it is because we used it for so long, or because we reviewed it and were tested on it so often. Or perhaps it was built in a fashion that made it easy to remember.

Theresa and I are excited to announce a significant role change for us in mid-2008, as we come off the staff of the Phoenix Valley Church.

For the past two years, we have been planning to come off staff at the end of 2008, at which time our financial support will come from Social Security payments, some money from retirement investments, along with income from further teaching and writing. However, the date had to be moved up due to opportunities that called for earlier involvement at a level that cannot be met while we are still on the staff.

Gary and Gail Sciascia Moving to Phoenix

Thirteen years ago, a couple from the South moved to Hartford, Connecticut. The church had been planted only a couple of months prior. They joined a small band of disciples who wanted to make a difference in the Greater Hartford area.
From day one of their arrival, Gary and Gail Sciascia were more than leaders in our congregation. They were lovers and servants of others and captured all of our hearts. After six years in Hartford, the Sciascias were placed into the ministry to train for only about six months. Then they were sent by the Spirit to Groton/New London, Connecticut (http://www.gnlicc.org/) , to be the evangelist and women's ministry leader. They have laid down their lives there admirably for the past seven years.

The Cooperation Proposal Revisited

About a year and a half ago, Steve Staten and I co-authored an article entitled Observations Regarding the Unity Proposal. It was a combination of a letter I had written to answer questions about the proposal (now called the United Plan For Cooperation) and Steve's very relevant comments about various types of written documents in religion. Over 350 churches have affirmed the Cooperation Plan. Many others are prayerfully considering it. In the months since that article was published, many of us have continued to answer questions and clarify issues

First, out of appreciation I must mention that HOPE is a nonprofit charitable organization with many excellent programs throughout the world ( www.hopeworldwide.org). One of their main programs is to get the future generations to see the desperate needs in other parts of the world and to begin to value doing something to help other people. This program is called HOPE Youth Corps.
